Back to Back Long weeks

Weeks 16 & 17 of the training program I have been following were nuts!! The first of the two hard weeks was not as hard as the second. My legs were spent on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday of the Second hard week. On Saturday when I started out my long run it was so much harder than when I started that exact same run the week before.

When I started my 12 mile run on the second Sunday however I felt much better than I did on the 12 the Sunday before it was the strangest thing. I think it was purely mental. I think on Sunday the 17th the 12 was so hard because I knew I had another brutal week ahead of me and then on the 24th the run was much easier because I knew I was starting my taper and that would be the last run over 10 that I had to do until race day.

Training for this race I have not been as mental about my running performance as I was when training for the Blues Cruise 50K. I have been running injury free for months and month now and that really had built my confidence up but the last two weeks the mental monster started to creep back in.

I have just started my taper and last week and even just yesterday I was all gung-ho to taper and now that it is here Im losing my mind already haha. I know my body needs this time to recover from all the running I have been doing the past few weeks. I really need to trust this training schedule that I have been following for the past 17 weeks, and trust myself. Today I have to run 4 tomorrow 8 Thursday 6 Saturday 10 and Sunday 8. Next week I will be on vacation so this taper couldn't have come at a better time! I remember stressing about my long runs last year on vacation and that wont be the case this year!

What to Pack for a Ragnar Trail Relay?

Months ago when we decided to sign up for the Ragnar Trail Relay in West Virginia I started a list on my phone of what I wanted to pack. I have been known for being a list maker. Thankfully I am not alone in my list making when more than half of my team has an Engineering background it turns out we are all pretty listy. Our one team member even set up a google doc of what to pack so that we can all edit it. I know I'm a nerd but I love being prepared and I love being organized.

I started packing over the weekend when I knew I wouldn't be wearing most of my running clothes until race day. For the Relay I will be running 3 times so I made sure to pack three complete running outfits. I found a really helpful tip online to place each outfit in a gallon ziplock bag so I wont have to be searching for everything in the middle of the night or while someone else may be sleeping. The event will be all day and all night so I needed to make sure I packed a headlamp and extra batteries. I …

No Lunch Run for Me

Yesterday I was unable to run during my lunch break. My first reaction was self pity but then I quickly had to realize my little girl and her health are far more important. My daughter has been sick on and off for a few weeks and her breathing was very labored and I knew she had to go back to the doctor. Thankfully I was able to get her an appointment that day but it meant leaving work for a few hours and missing my lunch hour. When I start a training plan I tend to get a little obsessive about sticking to as much as I can. I don't know when I became such a rule follower. I have a good friend that I get to work with each day and he came to my rescue yesterday and put me in my place and out of my pity party. Thank you. I need to remember that things are going to change and everything can not always go as planned. When I have acceptance my life is far more serene. So at the end of the day yesterday I did not get to run or even do an alternate workout like I had planned because my hu…

Real Food Real Fuel

On January 1st of this year I started a resolution to eat more real foods. This idea was sparked by real food bloggers like Lisa Leake and Trina Holden. These woman have inspired me greatly to not only eat more real foods but to cook and bake with more real foods. To start out my pledge I cut out all white flour and white sugar from my diet for 45 days. I started to bake my own bread because I could not find actual whole grain bread for sale. Have you ever read the ingredients of your whole wheat bread? It isn't really what it's cracked up to be. So many things in my kitchen had to go: ketchup, salad dressing, vegetable oil, Hershey's Chocolate Syrup, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Cool whip and the list goes on and on. I really had little to know knowledge about reading ingredients for years I was more concerned with calories and nutritional info which can be important info. but now to me the most important info is the ingredients. I am a huge chocolate fan so for the first …
